Students from across the UK have been learning about medicine at a national specialist Summer School at the University of Bradford in collaboration with the University of Leeds, and Bradford and Leeds NHS Trusts. The students will be rewarded with certificates on, Friday, 9 July, 2004, in recognition of their achievements throughout the week. The Summer School is part of the Government's 'Aim Higher' programme to widen participation in Higher Education by young people from under-represented groups who may not otherwise consider going to University. The aim of the week has been to allow students - aged between 15 and 16 years-old who may be thinking of a career in medicine or a related profession to experience different aspects of University life, to sample practical workshops involving science and health studies and to work alongside doctors and other health professionals in hospital and academic settings. It also provides support and advice about future applications to University. The Summer School has been organised by the Widening Participation Coordinator in Clinical Sciences, Mrs Andrea Diston, and is funded by a grant awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. All the activities arranged have been designed to give the participants as realistic and comprehensive an overview of student life as possible. The students have taken part in campus tours, talks on students finance, medicine and related subjects, future careers, as well as taking part in academic sessions. Activities have included lectures, practicals, and tutorials. Sessions on careers and employability have also been covered through work experience time at both Bradford and Leeds NHS Teaching Hospitals. Mrs Diston said: "The Summer School has been a truly collaborative venture and although the participants have been resident at the University of Bradford campus there has also been visits to the University of Leeds Campus and work experience in teaching hospitals at both Bradford and Leeds NHS trusts."
